In the early years of the 18th century the Hanoverian government was determined to tackle lawlessness in the Highlands and most especially the practice of cattle thieving aka ‘black trade’. The commander in chief of Scotland, General Wade, formed a regiment of six independent companies of 114 men each in 1739. The black and dark blue and green tartan worn by these men adopted the name to distinguish its members from the red-coated regular army. For much of the 18th century it was also known as ‘the government tartan’. The Black Watch tartan is certainly ubiquitous and remarkably popular as ever.
