The Macleans and the MacLaines are descended from a 13th century warrior, Gillean of the Battleaxe. After disputing the chieftainship, the two families went their own ways. Lachlan Lubanach became the first chief of the Duart line and was granted a large tract of land in South Eastern part of the Island of Mull. Here was built Duart castle with a commanding view over the Sound of Mull and the Firth of Lorne. The castle has been used in movies, most recently Entrapment (1999) with Sir Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.  Although records indicate that the original tartan dated back to the 15th the design seen today was formalized in 1830. It is also the basis of the Royal Stewart tartan.
